Thirty House Democrats, led by Representative Joaquin Castro, are demanding that the U.S. government end decades of silence surrounding Israel’s nuclear weapons capability. In a letter sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the lawmakers argued that Washington cannot credibly claim to support nuclear transparency and nonproliferation while refusing to publicly acknowledge Israel’s widely known nuclear arsenal.

The lawmakers criticized the long-standing policy of “strategic ambiguity,” under which both Republican and Democratic administrations have avoided officially confirming Israel’s nuclear status. The letter argues that this double standard weakens U.S. credibility, particularly as Washington pressures countries like Iran over nuclear activities while shielding Israel from similar scrutiny.

The push comes amid escalating regional tensions and growing fears of a wider Middle East war. Lawmakers warned that Congress cannot properly oversee U.S. involvement in the region without openly discussing the military realities on the ground, including Israel’s nuclear capability. While Israel has never officially confirmed possessing nuclear weapons, international analysts have long believed the country maintains a substantial undeclared arsenal.

The letter represents a rare public challenge to one of Washington’s most politically sensitive foreign policy subjects. For decades, even discussing Israel’s nuclear program openly has largely remained off-limits in mainstream U.S. politics.
